Description of Research Expertise

Translational Chronobiology
Dr. Skarke is studying oscillatory functional networks in the human chronobiome under basal and perturbed conditions, the modulation of these oscillatory functional networks by sex and age and their deconsolidation by disease. Time-specific study paradigms integrate a broad array of multiomics, clinical and remote sensing outputs. These studies accomplish the time-specific deep phenotyping at unprecedented scale.

Training the Next Generation of Clinical and Translational Scientists
Dr. Skarke directs ITMAT Education’s Translational Research Immersion Program (TRIP) which provides undergraduate students from participating institutions experiential learning opportunities in the field of clinical and translational research (CTR). TRIP accomplishes exposure, access and networking in CTR.

Building a Diverse, Inclusive Clinical & Translational Workforce
Through Dr. Skarke’s leadership, TRIP is now partnering with 12 institutions, specifically Bryn Mawr College, Haverford College, Howard University, Florida A&M University, Franklin & Marshall College, Lincoln University, Morehouse College, Spelman College, Swarthmore College, University of Pennsylvania, University of Puerto Rico, and Xavier University of Louisiana. TRIP has become a gateway to promote inclusive and diverse growth in the clinical and translational sciences.

Science to Art to Society and back!
Dr. Skarke established the inaugural artist-in-residence program embedded into TRIP 2022. The artist will witness the evolution of science research projects among our cohort of TRIP students and will translate their observations into work of art. This translational process will capture not only the science and scientific process but also the human experience embodied in emotions. Community members can relate to these emotions and thus become receptive to engage with science.
